(Scroll down for English version)

Civil Human Rights Front responds to Police’s Arrest of Protesters of 831 Protest

The epidemic of Coronavirus continues, and Carrie Lam’s government has not only refused to respond to public opinion but continue to arrest protesters. Since June 2019, the police indiscriminately arrested more than 7,000 individuals and violated people’s lawful rights to protest. Today, the police arrested three individuals, namely, Cheuk-yan Lee, Sum Yeung and Jimmy Lai for participating in an unauthorized assembly on August 31, 2019 (“831 Protest”). We are infuriated and we condemn the arrests of protesters.

Civil Human Rights Front applied for a march to take place on August 31, 2019, to protest against NPC’s decision which deprives Hong Kong people of universal suffrage. However, the police objected the application and our appeal failed. The public was dissatisfied that their lawful right to protest was infringed and protested nonetheless to highlight the absurdity of police suppressing Hong Kong people’s freedom of assembly. Carrie Lam’s government did not only fail to respond to public opinion but used violence to suppress the protest, causing the tragedy in Prince Edward MTR station on August 31, 2019. It is obvious that the arrest of protesters is planned by the police to suppress opposition and to further arrest opposition. The police have no respect for the law and considers themselves above the Basic Law, which guarantees freedom of assembly.

The tragedy is not over, police violence has not stopped, and the indiscriminate arrest of protesters are ongoing. Carrie Lam’s government attempts to use money to bribe public opinion but in reality, more of taxpayers’ money is used to purchase weapons for the police so they can further suppress opposition with extreme violence.

Civil Human Rights Front believes the actions of the police will only unite the people of Hong Kong, together, we become more persistent and courageous. Their actions further ingrain the tragedy of 831 Protest into our memory and we will never forget police violence.

Civil Human Rights Front asks the public not to forget those who are arrested and in prison. We pledge to continue opposing NPC’s decision and insist on true universal suffrage!
