Declaration of the July 1 Demonstration, 2007
Pursue Direct Election, Improve People’s Livelihood

Twenty years, ten years, four years
Never Does the Democratic Movement of the Hong Kong People Stop
Nineteen years ago, in 1988, we proposed the “88 Direct Election” and urged the colonial Government to implement universal suffrage so that Hong Kong people can become their own masters. The anti-democratic nature of the colonial rule, compounded with the “Go for bowls, Not for ballots” tactics of the conservative and pro-China camps, crushed down our first wave of democratic movement. However, the sparkles of the democratic fire have never died down.
Ten years ago, in 1997, Hong Kong was returned to China. Hong Kong people welcomed the arrival of July 1in conflicting moods. While we were happy for the ending of the colonial rule, we are frustrated for the suppression of the Central Government on democracy and human rights. At that time, we proposed the slogan, “Democratic Handover” – the day of handover should be the day of Hong Kong people being the masters. However, the Tung administration, worse than the colonial rule, protected the interests of local entrepreneurs and governed without efficacy that shattered our dream of democracy. Eventually, this triggered off the passion of Hong Kong people for universal suffrage and democracy.
Four years ago, on the day of July 1, 2003, five hundred thousands Hong Kong people, under the strong heat of summer, cried out, ”Oppose Twenty Three, Power to the People”. We objected to the national security legislation, which violated the freedom and rights of Hong Kong people. We urged for a sooner direct election for all Legislative Councilors and Chief Executive so that the governing power was back to the People. Consequently, the voice and the will of the People made Mr. Tung resign from office.
Tung goes, Tsang comes. The route for democracy has not proceeded much yet. Therefore, in this year, on day of July 1, 2007, we will step on the route from Victoria Park again. We will walk on the route for democracy again. Let the Hong Kong people give the strongest blare – Direct election for all Legislative Councilors. Direct election for Chief Executive. Implement democratic politics. Improve People’s livelihood. Proceed to an equal and just Hong Kong.
Let our voices for democracy ring through the whole island on this day of the 10th anniversary of the Handover and brighten all earth of our motherland.
